Pencil This In: A New K-town Art Walk, Mike Mills 'Thing' Launch Party, Graphic Design Talk and a Sunset Market

There's a bounty of events in LA tonight—from a grilled cheese night at the Sunset Market to a Mike Mills magazine launch party for issue 18 of The Thing, to a book signing with Metallica's guitarist Kirk Hammett and a new art walk and art talk on Metro designs. Read on for the details.
LIT TALK*
Family Bookstore holds a launch party and signing tonight at 7:30 pm for issue 18 of The Thing (a quarterly publication) by Mike Mills. The noted filmmaker/artist is best known for his feature films, including Beginners and Thumbsucker, and books Graphics Films (Damiani), and Fireworks (Nieves). Mills is in conversation tonight with Sean Uyehara, a programmer at the San Francisco Film Society. On the list of topics to discuss: Mary Louise Brooks, the Monarch Bear, the VHS tape v. Beta, chains of events v. fabric of events.
ART TALK
The Hammer Museum presents the program Michael Lejeune: A Cooler Ride tonight at 7:30 pm. It’s an evening with Metro’s creative director Michael Lejeune, whose 20-person inhouse team has been charged with the task of making public transportation cool through design. The talk is being heldin conjunction with the Hammer’s current exhibition Graphic Design: Now in Production.
ART
There’s a new art walk in town, making its debut tonight from 6-10 pm: Every last Thursday of the month, Wilshire Center-Koreatown Art and Architecture Walkpresents a self-guided tour of art galleries, historic architecture as well as restaurants, bars, shops and businesses located in Wilshire Center-Koreatown area. Start at The Spanish Fly Gastropub to pick up maps and schedules. End at the Gastropub, too, for an after-party with a local artist meet-n-greet, round table discussion, and late night happy hour starting at 8 pm.
DRINK
The Churchill on West 3rd Street celebrates its One Year Anniversary tonight. To celebrate, KCRW's Jason Bentley DJs a set at 11 pm and all specialty cocktails will be half off (making them just $6 a pop) after 10 pm.
HALLOWEEN MARKET
The Sunset Strip Market celebrates Halloween a little early tonight with a party from 5-9 pm. There’s free pumpkin decorating from 5-7 pm, and The Roxy holds another Grilled Cheese Night (with vegan options) and a craft beer and wine garden picked for a fall/spooky theme, including Heretic’s Shallow Grave Porter and Evil Cousin IPA. Live performances through the market by John West, Davis Fetter, Brayden Pierce and DJ Dayle Gloria. There are $5 validated parking options, too.
BOOKS
Join Metallica's guitarist Kirk Hammett tonight at 7 pm at the Barnes & Noble at The Grove for a book signing that’s perfect for the season. His new 224-page book Too Much Horror Business is a showcase of his extensive collection of horror memorabilia. This is a wristbanded event with a number of rules: Hammett will personalize books with first names only; photos allowed from the signing line (no posed photos). No memorabilia will be signed.
