Pencil This In: Michael Haneke Screens 'Amour,' X-tra Art Journal Celebration and Music, Film and Art Events

October is starting off with a bang tonight. There are so many art and film happenings around town that people probably didn't want to schedule during Carmageddon, so bonus for our Monday night. Read on for info about screenings of Amour, Wings, There's No Business Like Show Business, and art events at HM157 and ForYourArt.
ART*
The art journal X-TRA celebrates 15 years in LA with 15 days of programming at ForYourArt. X-TRA also presents an installation of all 57 back issues and ephemera of X-TRA and Project X Foundation for Art & Criticism. Tonight at 7:30 pm, Stephen Berens (along with Ellen Birrell, Leslie Dick, Karen Dunbar, Elizabeth Pulsinelli and Damon Willick) presents The Los Angeles Times and Me, a live performance of the 1998 video of the same name. “The video script is comprised of a series of text drawings that compare word usage between the articles Stephen Berens wrote for X-TRA in 1997 and the articles written about art by the four art critics of the Los Angeles Times during the same period.”

Tonight at 7:30 pm, Film Independent at LACMA presents a program with writer-director Michael Haneke, director of The White Ribbon, Cache and The Piano Teacher. In the director’s rare appearance, he’ll discuss his career as well as his latest film, Amour, which stars Jean-Louis Trintignant, Emmanuelle Riva, Isabelle Huppert. The presentation is followed by a screening of Amour. General tickets: $20.

Film restoration and preservation are at the heart of UCLA Film & Television Archive activities, and tonight the Archive opens the Out of the Past screening series of newly restored films, with discussions on contemporary restoration techniques and concerns and introductions by leading film preservationists. Tonight, Schawn Belston, 20th Century Fox, introduces the Walter Lang-helmed There’s No Business Like Show Business with Ethel Merman, Marilyn Monroe and Donald O’Connor. At the Billy Wilder Theater at 7:30 pm. Free.
THEATER
Rogue Machine closes out a benefit weekend of one-act plays about love. Fall in Love with Rogue Machine features three short pieces that explore love at different times in life, including Post-Its: Notes On A Marriage by Winnie Holzman; There’s No One Here by Craig Pospisil; Selected Love Letters by Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Featured performers: Paul Dooley, Kat Foster, Roxanne Hart, Winnie Holzman, Jon Huertas, Mia Maestro, Rider Strong, and James Wolk. 8 pm. Tickets: $30.
EATS + DRINK
There’s a restaurant exchange program tonight only, when Chef Luke Reyes and Barman Beau du Bois of The Corner Door in Culver City take over the kitchen and bar of Hollywood's Harvard & Stone. Reyes plans a tasting menu of small plates (most $5) and du Bois brings a new menu of hand crafted cocktails. 7 pm.
ART+MUSIC
Tonight from 6pm to midnight, HM157 in Lincoln Heights closes outJourney to the Center of My Mind, an event of art, film, and music curated by Spanish artist Gala Knorr. The exhibit, which features 10 women artists from around the world, is accompanied by music from Nora Keyes and LA's own "avant-folk weirdo" Featherbeard. $5 suggested donation.

Grauman’s Chinese Theater presents the85th anniversary screening of Wings with Clara Bow and Gary Cooper as part of the theater’s own 85th anniversary celebration. Wings won the first Academy Award ever—right across the street at the Roosevelt. It’s part of the 25 cent screening series so tickets are only a quarter.
MUSIC
It’s a School Nightwelcomes live music and DJ sets from both up-and-coming and seasoned artists every Monday night at Bardot in Hollywood. Live performances tonight by Jeans Wilder at 8:30 pm, Communist Daughter at 9:30 pm, Chris Stills at 10:30 pm and The Chevin at 11:30 pm. A DJ set by Savoir Adore closes the night at midnight. Free with RSVP for those 21+; $10 for 18+ with RSVP.
