LAst Laugh: This Week in Comedy

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

There's a lot more than just the Super Bowl going on this week. In fact, you could probably skip the big game altogether and just make it a week full of comedy shows. Here are some of the best we've found this week.

If you've got a show coming up you'd like to see listed here, email me.

MONDAY 1/28

By the Way…, 8:30p Largo. Jeff Garlin's occasional discussion series brings in the supernova star Will Ferrell. Good luck landing tickets.

Le Village, 9p Rockwell Table & Stage. It's a variety comedy sort of night with Natasha Leggero, Kyle Kinane, James Adomian and others hitting the stage in Los Feliz.

TUESDAY 1/29

New Material, 8p The Laugh Factory. Kevin Nealon hosts this long-running show, and this week it features Jeff Garlin, Jade Catta-Preta, YouTube's Taryn Southern and more.

Impro(vs)standup, 9:30p UCB. Two comedy communities collide as the audience votes between an improv set from darlings Convoy, or stand up from Eric Andre and Joe Wengert (the traitor that he is).

WEDNESDAY 1/30

Les Sizzlerables / Paul Welsh Goes to a TED Conference, 8p UCB. It's the best in high-brow and low-brow humor, as some of UCB's best modify Les Mis to make sense inside a Sizzler, and Paul Welsh makes your brain work with a series of TED Talks.

Never Been Fist, 9p Westside Comedy. Do you like improv? Then you're probably nerdy enough to already like puppets, so this improvised puppet show should be right up your alley. NOTE: It's probably not OK for kids.

THURSDAY 1/31

Brad Garrett, 8p Comedy & Magic Club. Longtime stand up and character actor Garrett is heading out to the beach for one show. 4

Doug Loves Movies, 8p NerdMelt Showroom. Doug Benson's traveling movie review podcast show heads to NerdMelt for the evening, with plenty of funny friends in tow.

FRIDAY 2/1

Dan St. Germain, 8p Hollywood Improv. German is a longtime stand up and podcaster who is headlining the main room on Melrose.

Matty's Birthday Party, 10p Lyric Hyperion. Matty Cardarople is bringing a bunch of his friends out to celebrate, including Eric Andre, Josh Fadem, Kyle Mooney and more.

SATURDAY 2/2

Two-Headed Beast, 8p Stories Books & Cafe. To celebrate two years, this storytelling show has brought in Sean Green, Kyle Kinane, Hasan Minhaj and more.

12 Shiny Nickels, 11p Westside Comedy. The new home of this popular stand up show will feature work from Zach Ames, Brandie Posey, Lizzy Cooperman, Dan St. Germain and others this Saturday night.

SUNDAY 2/3

C'mon, everyone is watching the Super Bowl. Go make fun of the commercials or something.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
