Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Don't worry baby, summer's not over yet! Don't you worry, either. Labor Day has come and will soon be gone, but there are still plenty of ways to make your face smile with laughter this week. A bunch of great indie stand up shows are bringing the heat, and the outlying Improvs (Brea, Ontario and Irvine) must be celebrating early 2000's week, judging by the stand ups they're having out.

if you've got a future show you'd like to see listed here, email me.

MONDAY 9/3

Harold Night, 8p UCB. With the day off, strap in for a full night of long form improv. Every Harold team will be performing, from 8pm to around midnight.

Brent Weinbach, 9p NerdMelt Theater. Weinbach’s new album Mostly Live is out, and the release party is going to have some of his favorite stand ups around, including TJ Miller, Rory Scovel, Ryan Stout and others.

TUESDAY 9/4

Harmontown, 8p NerdMelt Theater. The sometimes irascible Dan Harmon’s live show is now weekly at NerdMelt, so you can follow along as he definitely divulges every bit of his being on stage.

The Pop Up Comedy Show, 8p The Mint. Head to Pico Blvd. for a night of laughs that includes Rory Scovel, Eric Andre and a few other great names.

WEDNESDAY 9/5

Debateball, 8p iO West. Competing teams try to out-funny each other while making their points known. This week: OBAMA vs. ROMNEY.

Todd Barry & Friends, 9p Largo. Barry is bringing along Marc Maron, Maria Bamford and others for a night of stand up.

THURSDAY 9/6

Murder Abbey, 8p UCB. New York’s Kate Hess is out on the Left Coast doing her murderous Downton Abbey parody show.

John C. Reilly & Friends, 9p Largo. Not to be outdone, Reilly is putting together a music-focused night at Largo. But something tells me there will be plenty of laughs...

FRIDAY 9/7

Pablo Francisco, 8p Ontario Improv. Francisco is making a weekend out of it in Ontario.

Carlos Mencia, 10:30p Brea Improv. There is a world where Mencia will draw a crowd. That world may well be Brea.

SATURDAY 9/8

Come Laugh With Us, 8p Cinefamily. Filmmaker Lance Bangs is calling in some comedy favors, with a night that features Nick Kroll, Tenacious D, Jonah Ray, Chelsea Peretti and more.

Sebastian Maniscalco, 10p Hollywood Improv. Longtime headliner Maniscalco was recently on Marc Maron’s extremely popular WTF podcast, which should boost is credibility with casual stand up fans.

SUNDAY 9/9

John Henson, 7p Irvine Improv. The quirky, lovable Henson is in Irvine giving some OC folks the giggles this weekend.

The Blackout Show, 11p iO West. How many blackout sketches can fit on one stage in a limited time window? A lot, is the answer, and most of them will be really goofy.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
