LAst Laugh: This Week in Comedy
As we continue to run through the weeks of another great summer, stop to smell the comedy roses once in awhile. This week, Humphrey Ker brings back his fantastic WWII-inspired show to the UCB stage, a new monthly stand up show premieres downtown and Long Way Down comes back from the brink. Enjoy!
As always, if you've got a show coming up that you'd like to see listed here, email me.
MONDAY 7/9
Comedy Tapioca, 8:30p iO West. It’s early-week stand up at one of the premiere improv comedy spots in Los Angeles.
Hour Comedy Time, 8:45p Atwater Crossing. Another Hour Comedy Time is upon us, with Ali Waller, UCB’s Neil Campbell, Ron Babcock and others doing a mix of sketch and stand up.
TUESDAY 7/10
Performance Anxiety, 8p Pleasure Chest. Eli Olsberg and TJ Miller’s stand up show features Paul Scheer, Kyle Kinane, Erin Foley, Melissa Villasenor and more.
Fancy! / The Teddy Teddy Show, 8p Cavern Club. Chris Farah and Pete Zias are putting up back-to-back solo shows in Silver Lake. Fancy! Follows a Southern belle turned prostitute and Teddy Teddy follows a 90’s Club Kid of the same name.
WEDNESDAY 7/11
The Meltdown, 8:30p NerdMelt Theater. Jonah Ray and Kumail Nanjiani’s weekly stand up show features Duncan Trussell, Jordan Morris, Jenny Slate and a bunch more folks.
Persona!, 8:30p Hollywood Improv Lab. Tony Sam and Aparna Nancherla host a night of character comedy.
THURSDAY 7/12
Dymock Watson, Nazi Smasher!, 8p UCB. Humphrey Ker of The UK’s Penny Dreadfuls group does his outstanding one-man show about WWII. It’s seriously the best thing you’ll see in a while.
Art F*ck, 9p Downtown Independent. Holy F*ck is starting up a show during downtown’s monthly Art Walk, and to kick things off they’ve got Brent Weinbach, Sean Patton, Dave Ross, Raj Desai and others.
FRIDAY 7/13
Naked People, 7p UCB. Julia Wiedeman isn’t afraid to talk about nudity, show off some skin, and be hilarious in the process.
Pizza Con, 8p NerdMelt Theater. Fox has a new late night animation block coming up called ADHD, and they’re showing off some of their pilots to the crowd. Plus, they’ll have comics and discussion with writers. Plus pizza.
SATURDAY 7/14
Long Way Down, 7p The Graff Lab. We loved Long Way Down before it got shut all the way down, but it’s back now in a graffiti space downtown. Ron Funches, Dave Ross, Alex Hooper, Ed Galvez and a bunch of other comics will be around.
Patton Oswalt & Friends, 9p Largo. Oswalt is sure to bring along some fantastic stand ups to make this a great night of comedy.
SUNDAY 7/15
Craig Robinson, 7p Irvine Improv. Robinson is doing a weekend of stand up in Orange County.
Clue: A Staged Reading, 8:30p Largo. Anthony King has put together a ton of comedy greats to do a staged reading of a board game, if that makes sense. Jon Cryer, Jordan Peele, Rachel Harris, Colin Hanks, Jack McBrayer, Chris Parnell, Matt Walsh. It’s nuts!
As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.
Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.
We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.
No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.
Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
