Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

This week is absolutely buried under a mountain of great indie shows. From the first ever Brunch through Dave Foley stepping in at the Also-Ran Comedy Hour, there is an absolute plethora of great (and cheap) shows to see around town.

If you'd like to see a show listed here in the future, email me and I'LL DECIDE YOUR FATE.

MONDAY 4/18

The 4 & 20 Show, 8p All Star Lanes. Comedy in a bowling alley? Yes, please! Brandie Posey, Paul Cibis and a few other comics, with Josh Androsky hosting.

Brunch, 9p The Park. Be there for the first Brunch, a new indie stand up show in Echo Park. Highlights include Brent Weinbach and Joe Wengert.

TUESDAY 4/19

Chicken & The Fetus, 8p Comedy Central Stage. A stand up / improv mash up show, with sets from Laurie Kilmartin, Baron Vaughn and MC Mister Napkins.

Biscuits & Gravy, 8:30p Improv Lab. Eli Olsberg, Jonah Ray, Dan Bialek and a bunch more great stand ups for cheap.

WEDNESDAY 4/20

Meltdown Show, 8:30p Meltdown Comics. Howie Kremer, Ali Wong, Garfunkel and Oates, Dominic Dierkes and a host of other great stand ups round out the night.

Frolic!, 9p Far Bar. Frolic is always a great time, and with lineups like this (TJ Miller, Lizzy Cooperman, Brent Weinbach, etc.) it’s easy to see why.

THURSDAY 4/21

The Super Serious Show, 7p Smashbox Studios. Kot dayum! Thomas Lennon, Brendon Walsh, Matt Besser, Aisha Tyler, videos from Honor Student and a grip more great folks.

Jesse Miller Talk Show, 8p ???. Jesse Miller (Andre Hyland) is one of the best comedy characters in Los Angeles, and his Jesse Miller Talk Show is an absolute killer. This show is listed as ‘private’, but email blondchiliproductions@hotmail.com to get in on the goodness (including Har Mar Superstar and Bob Odenkirk).

FRIDAY 4/22

Laughing Stock, 7:30p Malo. Head upstairs for a double-dose of stand up. Emily Maya Mills, Amy Claire, Jen Kober, Adam Barnhardt and more!

The Also-Ran Comedy Hour, 10:30p Improv Lab. Are you NOT going to make it out to a show that has Dave Foley? Come on.

SATURDAY 4/23

Garfunkel & Oates, 8:30p Largo. The delightful G & O girls are back at Largo for a night of musical comedy that always impresses.

Pablo Francisco, 9p Ontario. Francisco is in Ontario doing a TON of shows all weekend.

SUNDAY 4/24

Ultimate X-Ecution, 8p iO West. The X continues to try to find 2011’s best single improviser in LA. Come help them decide.

Running Your Trap, 9:30p UCB. What a great comedy / game show format from Jimmy Pardo: bring together some comedy greats, have two of them tell the truth and one of them lie when storytelling on a particular topic. Then let the audience figure it out!

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
