LAist Goes Shopping: CB2 at 8000 Sunset

Truth matters. Community matters. Your support makes both possible. LAist is one of the few places where news remains independent and free from political and corporate influence. Stand up for truth and for LAist. Make your year-end tax-deductible gift now.

Once upon a time, Angelenos flocked to 8000 W Sunset Blvd to buy CDs at the Virgin Megastore's US flagship. But since no one seems to buy actual discs anymore, the Virgin Megastore fell prey to economic hard times, and, following on the heels of iconic Sunset Strip music retailer Tower Records, closed up shop for good over a year ago.

But something is happening at the plaza at 8000 Sunset that doesn't involve bulldozing a perfectly usable building (and when you think about how regretful it often is to bulldoze a structure to put something else up, this is really a wise move for this specific square footage). See: Schwab's Pharmacy and across-the-street Garden of Allah). Moved into a portion of the former Virgin space is home decor store CB2 in their first SoCal location (and the 6th altogether).

CB2 is an off-shoot of the Crate & Barrel brand, but has honed in on hip, modern, and affordable furnishings and accessories aimed at the thirtysomething set. Located on the cusp of WeHo and, therefore, a stone's throw from LA's style-center, CB2 has made wonderful use of the space, and fits right in at 8000 Sunset. The store opens to the public tomorrow (April 30th) but they opened up their doors and let the media have a sneak peak at their bright and brand-new LA digs.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive before year-end will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
