You'd think the killer robot budget would be larger in a KILLER ROBOT MOVIE! | Photo courtesy of Imaginaut Entertainment

With horror, skin-flicks, sword & sorcery, and even family fare to his (and MANY pseudonyms') credit, Jim Wynorski is a rambunctious renaissance man. Long known (and feared) amongst b-movie lovers, general interest is at a bloody, busty peak thanks to Wynorski doc Popatopolis (which premiered last week), and this Saturday's Wynorski showcase at the New Beverly. It's cleavage, carnage and tan-lines galore with The Lost Empire, a babes-in-battle-armor fantasy flick; Chopping Mall, a robo-rampage shot at the Beverly Center and Sherman Oaks Galleria; and Demoliton High, a low-rent, high-school hostage thriller starring the dead Corey and Dr. Seaver! Wynorski will be in attendance, accompanied by Chopping Mall starlet Kelli Maroney. If that isn't enough '80s exploitation, the Aero hosts creature features Alligator and Cujo, alongside their director, Lewis Teague. The Aero also projects the creepy crawlies of William S. Burroughs adaptation-biopic-degenerate-hybrid Naked Lunch, with stone-faced Burroughs stand-in Peter Weller in-person.

If even Burroughs is too structured for your taste, REDCAT sets the stage and frees all form for Dance Camera West, opening this Friday and running all month. The dance/media film festival proclaims its 9th year with line-ups of experimental shorts from all corners of the globe. Each film twists choreography, communication and the human body, purifying cinema into raw, vibrant motion. A similar break down occurs in the works of abstract auteur Stan Brakhage. His hand-painted films blur light, movement and color into exquisite chaos. The Criterion Collection recently enshrined Brakhage in blu-ray, but this Sunday, the Los Angeles Filmforum presents a rare collection of 16mm Brakhage screenings at the Egyptian Theatre. Another abstract artist, Sam Francis, gets his documentary due in The Painter Sam Francis, playing in weekend morning shows at Laemmle's Pasadena & Santa Monica.

That's all for this week. Did I ever tell you about the man who taught his asshole to write?

Compiled, as always, by the amazing and diligent Edward Yerke-Robins (and family!)

At LAist, we believe in journalism without censorship and the right of a free press to speak truth to those in power. Our hard-hitting watchdog reporting on local government, climate, and the ongoing housing and homelessness crisis is trustworthy, independent and freely accessible to everyone thanks to the support of readers like you.

But the game has changed: Congress voted to eliminate funding for public media across the country. Here at LAist that means a loss of $1.7 million in our budget every year. We want to assure you that despite growing threats to free press and free speech, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust. Speaking frankly, the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news in our community.

We’re asking you to stand up for independent reporting that will not be silenced. With more individuals like you supporting this public service, we can continue to provide essential coverage for Southern Californians that you can’t find anywhere else. Become a monthly member today to help sustain this mission.

Thank you for your generous support and belief in the value of independent news.
