Since the New Beverly goes dark for the holidays, we give thanks this week. We love the New Beverly's special events so much that we sometimes take for granted how solid their "standard" repertory programming is. Tomorrow marks the last day of their week-long premiere run of Human Zoo, the first feature from Danish supermodel turned actress turned filmmaker Rie Rasmussen (formerly of Huntington Beach). The stylish thriller stars Rasmussen & Serbian actor Nikola Djuricko (who also appears in In the Land of Blood and Honey, Angelina Jolie's forthcoming debut as director) as Kosovar refugees who struggle to overcome war trauma in France's illegal immigrant underground. New Beverly owner Quentin Tarantino is a big fan, calling it "as shocking and violent as it is moving and charming." Human Zoo is paired with Rasmussen's last film as actress, Luc Besson's Angel-A (which may be the most stereotypically "French" thing you'll see all day).

Friday & Saturday, the Bev boasts Duncan Jones' technothrillers Moon (starring Sam Rockwell) & Source Code (starring Jake Gyllenhaal). If you blinked a couple years back, you missed Moon, a science-fiction meditation on loneliness amid an advanced moon base. Source Code, one of the year's best, is an ingenious puzzle layered between alternate realities with some nice food for thought in addition to ticking time-bombs Sunday starts a classic creature double feature of The Birds & Jaws. In the middle of it all are midnight screenings of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (Friday) & John Carpenter's Vampires (Saturday).

From two of the creepiest critters to one of the crappiest, this month's Horrible Movie Night features SyFy Original Mega Python vs. Gatoroid. Set deep in the heart of Griffith Park the Everglades, the CGI (C-Grade Imagery) showdown stars 80s chart-toppers Debbie Gibson & Tiffany (neither a stranger to made-for-TV Mega Monster X films). Director Mary Lambert (Pet Sematary) probably wishes she could bury this, but other cast & crew will be there to dig up dirt. If you crave more mutant reptiles, the Downtown Independent also has a beer pong drink-a-long to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from 8-2 on Friday night.
