We need to hear from you.
Today during our spring member drive, put a dollar value on the trustworthy reporting you rely on all year long. The local news you read here every day is crafted for you, but right now, we need your help to keep it going. In these uncertain times, your support is even more important. We can't hold those in power accountable and uplift voices from the community without your partnership. Thank you.

For British noir fans, the final screenings of Went The Day Well? at the New Beverly will go down very well indeed. The newly restored 1942 film, based on a novel from anguished author Graham Greene, ends a rare week-long run paired with another Greene script. Tonight, it's The Third Man, starring Orson Welles in one of his most famous roles as the seedy Harry Lime. Tomorrow, it's Brighton Rock, a bloody good gangster pic starring Richard Attenborough (later of The Great Escape & Jurassic Park).

Of course, each evening's crown jewel is still Went The Day Well? Set in a post-WWII Britain (already an optimistic turn at that point in the war!), the charming comedy cum dark thriller about a village discovering German assimilators proved to be a sublime piece of propaganda. Its reputation has only grown in the decades since. As Kenneth Turan recently wrote in the LA Times, the film "was unsettling in its day and is even more so now."

HELLRAISER 1,2,3 TRAILER (Friday Night Frights) from Mighty Worm on Vimeo.

You'll be pinned to your seat when the Cinefamily's "Franchise Thursdays" series features the first three Hellraiser films tomorrow night: Clive Barker's original Hellraiser, Hellbound: Hellraiser II & Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth. For those unfamiliar with the series, it's known for its exploration of S&M fantasy through extreme gore, epitomized in the leatherbound icon Pinhead. Cenobite stalkers will take great pains to tell you these three are the cream of the crop. Since then, Hellraiser has been shot into space & dragged through the mud of direct-to-video sequels. Between films, Hellraiser II director Tony Randel & Hellraiser II & III writer Peter Atkins subject themselves to your most piercing questions.
