The nonprofessional filmmaker has been a fixture of cinema from The Lumière Brothers' films featuring factory workers and their families through to the "found footage" genre epitomized in the Paranormal Activity franchise.
This Saturday, the Academy celebrates the art of the amateur with Home Movie Day. Bring the film history gathering dust in your closet down to the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood. The archivists in attendance will appreciate all of it, be it a well-worn wedding tape or that Super 8 zombie movie you made as a kid. Film check-in begins at 11 a.m., with free screenings running until 4 p.m..
Those who lived and breathed show business kept their own cameras rolling long after they left the set. Hollywood Home Movies III is a charming companion piece to Home Movie Day, featuring star-studded sneak peeks at Golden Age Hollywood homes, local landmarks and uber-rare behind-the-scenes footage of Gone With The Wind.
Sunday, the Kodachrome continues with Amateur Night: Home Movies From American Archives. The 35mm mixtape runs from 1915-2005, comprised of the real life Smokey The Bear, Alfred Hitchcock's home life, presidential visits to Anytown USA and flea-market family films. Both these programs are $5 a pop. Experience these fuzzy traces of Americana before they fade away forever.
The Cinefamily is no stranger to mega-rare movie melds. Their latest, Bollywood Bloodbath, is a whole night of Hindi horrors, boasting song, dance and dimestore effects. The masala monster mash opens with a Mondo Mixtape tribute to the Ramsay Brothers.
The first spook show spinners in Southeast Asia, the Ramsays tore through the conservative framework of Indian film culture with works like Bandh Darwaza (aka "The Bollywood Dracula") and Mahakaal (aka "The Bollywood Nightmare on Elm Street"). While clearly constrained by their budgets, the Ramsays took the (cricket) ball and ran with it, intercutting Indian culture & Hollywood inspiration. Following the film, Finders Keepers Records hosts an undead Desi dance party with tracks from a forthcoming Bollywood Bloodbath compilation album. How do you say "thriller" in Hindi?
