The late David F. Friedman was truly the Mighty Monarch of exploitation films. His ribald roadshows were unrivaled. In an era when a bare breast could get you driven out of town, his films went all the way. This Saturday, the New Beverly & Grindhouse Film Festival go all out in his memory with an all day tribute.

The madness begins at 3PM with Space Thing, a psychedelic sci-fi shoestring send-up. Next comes Scum of the Earth, a notorious "roughie" about an innocent girl caught up in glamor pictures. She Freak is both David Friedman's love letter to his early days as a carnival barker and a thinly veiled remake of the 1930's cult classic Freaks. A Smell of Honey, A Swallow of Brine is pure sexploitation, starring a sultry siren as a maniacal man eater.

After the sun goes down, the body count comes up! Blood Feast is the first gore film ever made, and still wonderfully nasty. Can your mind comprehend the horrors of an Egyptian feast? The Pick-Up stars Friedman & fellow exploiteur Bob Creese in rare acting roles as two mob bosses cheated out of a million bucks. There's only one print of this super sleazy, tres violent noir left on the planet, and it's playing on this program! The night closes out with Starlet, a megasexual metatextual nudie movie about the making of a nudie movie.

For those keeping track, that's 7 features. But Grindhouse Film Fest fans know they never stop there. They've teamed with Seattle's Something Weird Video (who worked closely with Friedman to preserve his films on DVD) to curate countless reels of rare trailers & shorts that bookend each movie. Special guests throughout the day ensure the sleaze won't stop til 3 in the morning! Best of all: a wrist-band enabling in-out privileges for the entire program (so you can eat something - or take a cold shower) is only $12! That's a dollar an hour for a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Friday, another fearless independent producer (this one, thankfully, still with us) gets his due when the Newport Beach Film Festival premieres Matt Walsh's High Road. It's Sophie's Choice for stoners: give up selling weed or give up on your pregnant girlfriend. A crumbling rock band, job loss & terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad deal only add to the mayhem. Walsh is a co-founder of the Upright Citizens Brigade, and the imperial of improv brings together a killer comedy posse for his first feature: James Pumphrey (Walsh's SpikeTV show Players) Abby Elliott (Saturday Night Live), Ed Helms (The Hangover Parts I & II), Lizzy Caplan (Party Down, True Blood), Zach Woods (The Office), Rich Fulcher (The Mighty Boosh), Kyle Gass (Tenacious D) & UCB all-stars Rob Riggle & Horatio Sanz, amongst others. Tickets for High Road's 7:30 premiere and the Friday Night Showcase festival after-party are available at the Festival's site.
