LAist Film Calendar 03/31-04/03: Save The World, Then Send It To Hell!
The Antelope Valley has set the stage for many a film (including Star Trek, Stephen Spielberg's Duel, Kill Bill & countless westerns), but rarely gets to be the star of the show. The hipster road movie LiTTLEROCK bucks this trend, following two Japanese tourists whose car breaks down amidst the sweeping vistas & dusty trails of Littlerock (hope they hit up Charlie Brown Farms!).
Continuing the "global village" theme, Cinema Speakeasy's LiTTLEROCK screening this Sunday at Royal/T doubles as a fundraiser for Second Harvest Japan's earthquake & tsunami relief. Director Mike Ott appears for a Q&A, and Royal/T's cute-as-a-button cosplay wait staff will take dinner & drink orders.
Keep making a difference with the Do Something Reel Film Festival. The traveling showcase kicks off Earth Month with 6 documentaries in sustainable succession at several Laemmle's locations. Bag It explores our cultural obsession with single use plastics, and potential consequences for our bodies, cities & planet. It's an issue of particular interest to us thanks to county & city bag bans. Lunch Line looks at the history of the National School Lunch Program to better understand weaknesses within the current program while looking for a way forward. The subject matter is a must for parents or relatives of K-12 students; over half a million LA county kids receive free or reduced price meals through this program (PDF link), with twice as many eligible.
The rest of Do Something Reel's line-up is equally important, though less LA-specific. On Coal River traces a West Virginia town blotted by strip mining pollution, while Planeat analyzes how producing what we eat affects the environment. The Vanishing Of The Bees attempts to unravel the sudden death of thousands of honey bee colonies, and Urban Roots ends on a positive tip by introducing the work of urban farmers growing communities, jobs & food in Detroit. Two more film festivals round out a busy week. Glendale's Alex Theatre hosts the 168 Film Festival. The all-day (10AM-10PM) event features 70 faith-based shorts created in 168 hours, each focusing on a biblical verse. Thou shalt not covet, but the organizers have posted many of the trailers for a little taste of divinity.
For a more hellish affair, the Downtown Independent has the Heavy Metal Film Fest. The underworld has unleashed a killer slate of concert documentaries - including classic metal, black metal, thrash metal, Finnish metal, Guatemalan metal, crowd-pleaser Anvil! The Story of Anvil and a rare midnight screening of Hated: G.G. Allin & The Murder Junkies, a filthy-as-all-get-out rockumentary from a pre-Hangover Todd Phillips.
