The 25th Film Independent Spirit Awards were held at the Nokia Live center in downtown Los Angeles on Friday, March 5th, 2010. We spoke with James Gray, director of "Two Lovers"; Judy Cairo, producer of "Crazy Heart" - who won! Kyle Patrick Alvarez (LAist interview), director of "Better With Practice" - who won! Sam Trammell aka Sam Merlotte from HBO's "True Blood"; actress Laura Dern; the band Anvil as featured in "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" - who won! Oren Moverman, director and writer of "The Messenger" - who won! And Jennifer Caserta, Executive VP & General Manager of IFC, the host network.

The event was held downtown after usually being held on the beach in Santa Monica for years. It was a bit of a hellish experience as it was very cold downtown and the event managers had overbooked the media thus leaving us with a space smaller than 8 1/2" x 11", meaning we must've hit the people on either side of us with our cameras at least a dozen times. Furthermore, our media pass that we were granted couldn't get us into an area where we could get food or warmth after the red carpet. We're not sure we will do this again next year, but it was interesting to do at least once. We did get a lot of photos which we will post tomorrow.

One year ago, Congress voted to defund public media, eliminating a critical $1.7 million from our budget every year going forward. But they couldn’t silence us, and we’re not going anywhere. LAist is now 100% community funded and that means we’re taking our future into our own hands and turning to you to keep local reporting strong.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our nonprofit newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our communities. We are free to follow facts wherever they lead and to hold power to account without fear or favor. Our only loyalty is to our readers and listeners and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen Southern California’s communities.
