According to Curbed, Gesner was inspired to build the boathouses after a man named Ronald Buck asked him what could be done with a series of narrow, 25-foot wide lots in the Cahuenga Pass. Gesner hired the Norwegian shipbuilders to bring his designs to life, who used handaxes instead of saws.
