For us Twilight Zone fans, it was a sad thing to see the Tower of Terror permanently shuttered. But bygones are bygones, and we're now entering the era of Chris Pratt and sentient tree-like beings. A ride called "Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout" will take over the looming structure at Disney California Adventure, and it's slated to open on May 27, according to the OC Register.

As described on the Disney Parks Blog, the ride will send visitors on a perilous mission replete with thrills and a talking raccoon: "As you help Rocket bust his pals out of the Collector’s Fortress, you will experience randomized ride experiences complete with all-new visual and audio effects and music inspired by the popular film soundtracks."

There'll also be a "Summer of Heroes" event that ties in with the ride. The event, running from May 27 through September 10, will include an "Awesome Dance Off!," which really is advertised as a dance party with music supplied by a boom box. There'll also be something called "Super Hero Encounters," in which you get to meet the Guardians of the Galaxy cohort, as well as Marvel intellectual properties superheroes Captain America and Spider Man.

And if you need more of a space opera kick, the upcoming Star Wars land will be arriving sometime in 2019.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive from readers like you will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
