Historical Walk / Secret Stairs Movie
Hotel Figueroa -- 939 S Figueroa St., downtown L.A. (meeting point)
Author and historian Bob Inman leads a one-hour walk through of historic sections of DTLA. After a dinner break, participants are welcome to watch Russell Brown's documentary Above the Arroyo: A Dream of the Stairs of Los Angeles at Regal L.A. Live at 9 p.m. The walk is free; film tickets cost $18.

Filipino American History Month Ice Cream
Wanderlust Creamery in Pasadena, Tarzana and Atwater Village
All month long, the artisanal ice cream shop celebrates its owners' heritage by offering flavors that reflect Filipino American culinary traditions. Taste the sans rival (buttercream ice cream studded with crunchy cashew dacquoise), sapin sapin (a trio of Ube Malted Crunch, jackfruit and sticky) and this week's specials, green mango and salted duck egg yema (both available through Oct. 10). Wanderlust's Smorgasburg outpost will only stock a few of these flavors.

The Egyptian Theatre -- 6712 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood
Hulu teams with Beyond Fest to present a free screening of Michael Goi's nautical horror. Gary Oldman stars as a man who launches a charter yacht business with his partner (Emily Mortimer). They acquire a boat with a sinister history and while on a voyage, something evil begins to manifest. Tickets only available at the box office one hour before showtime; two tickets per person maximum.

Manet and Modern Beauty
The Getty Museum -- 1200 Getty Center Dr., Brentwood
Painter Édouard Manet (1832-1883) shocked contemporary audiences with his provocative images of "modern" Paris and its denizens. The Getty's exhibition is the first to explore the last years of Manet's life and work. These intimate, lesser known works include portraits, still lifes and café and garden scenes.

Brittany Howard
The Theatre at Ace Hotel -- 929 S. Broadway, downtown L.A.
The lead singer of Alabama Shakes strikes out on her own.Howard performs for two nights in support of her solo debut, Jaime, named for her older sister, who died at 13 from a rare form of eye cancer. Expect soulful and emotional live shows from one of today's most powerful voices.

Women Who Whiskey L.A. present a workshop at the glam underground speakeasy, which stocks an American whiskey from every state in the Union. Attendees enjoy a welcome cocktail then learn how to make three drinks from the Queensberry's own Scott Cushman. This event is 21+. Desert Daze

The festival returns with a lineup that includes Wu-Tang Clan (performing 36 Chambers), Ween, the Flaming Lips, Flying Lotus, Khruangbin, Stereolab, Animal Collective, Moses Sumney, Pussy Riot, Fred Armisen and the Beginning of the End for DEVO. Opening ceremonies and talks include Ian Svenonius, a Q&A with Les Claypool and Sean Lennon, and a screening of the 2019 documentary We Intend to Cause Havoc. The fest also features a mystic bazaar and art installations.

Mods and Rockers Film Festival

As the festival celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, it focuses on several inter-connected anniversaries in the Monty Python universe. The festival opens with a new documentary about George Harrison's boutique movie studio, HandMade Films, which was founded to support the Pythons. The night opens with a screening of Python rarities, followed by a Q&A with filmmakers Bill Jones and Ben Timlett.

Natural History of Horror
Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM) -- 900 W. Exposition Blvd., Exposition Park
The exhibition links science, history and the art of movie making by exploring scientific discoveries that inspired some of the most iconic movie monsters. With 17 objects from NHM's collection and four early Universal monster movies (Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy and Creature from the Black Lagoon), museum visitors explore the inspiration behind the monsters through rare movie props, film footage, hands-on installations and specimens from NHM. The Count's Den -- L.A.'s vampire sanctuary -- presents a 21+ theatrical dining experience. Dine with the undead while taking part in an immersive murder mystery-horror experience. The night includes adult beverages and human food provided by the Den's tongueless servant, Edmond, and his mortal familiar who owns the local eatery GaiGan Thai. (The menu is free of gluten, dairy and peanuts because vampires are thoughtful like that.) Don't worry about dining with the vampires. We're told guests' safety is guaranteed.
