Sad news: Minke whale that captured attention is found dead in Long Beach Harbor
A minke whale that had been swimming around in the Long Beach Harbor for most of last week was found dead Sunday morning.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration was working with local officials to examine the carcass and determine what happened to the whale, according to Michael Milstein, public affairs officer with NOAA.
Milstein said the agency will release more information as it becomes available.
The whale was first reported in the harbor early last week with no signs of obvious injury or illness.
Officials tried to encourage the whale to leave the harbor by directing it out around the Catalina Landing dock, but Milstein told LAist Friday that it was stubborn about leaving. He believed that a bridge that crosses the harbor and cuts across the open sea may be to blame.
Animals stuck in the harbor typically find their way out but if you see animals in similar situations, you can report them by calling (866)-767-6114.
