Pacific Coast Highway to reopen following Palisades Fire
Topline:
A stretch of Pacific Coast Highway that was damaged during the Palisades Fire will reopen at 6 a.m. Thursday. Only residents of Pacific Palisades and Malibu, as well as school buses and affected businesses will be able to enter the area.
The details: One lane in each direction with a 25 mph speed limit will be open between Chautauqua Boulevard in Pacific Palisades and Carbon Beach Terrace in Malibu, according to a Caltrans spokesperson. At a virtual town hall Wednesday night, officials said intersections with a flashing red stoplight should be treated as four-way stops. There will be checkpoints with L.A. County Sheriff’s deputies.
The backstory: Caltrans has kept a roughly 9-mile stretch of the highway largely closed since the Palisades Fire last month. A rain storm earlier this month led to debris flows and a slide north of Big Rock Drive in Malibu.
What’s next: Officials are still warning residents not to return without proper personal protective equipment. For more tips and safety resources visit recovery.lacounty.gov. Officials will hold town hall meetings with updates every Wednesday here.
