Topline:

With summer heat waves in full effect, the L.A. Department of Water and Power is reminding customers that they can qualify for rebates on air conditioning units through the agency's "Cool L.A." initiative.

Who qualifies: All residential customers with active accounts are eligible for up to $125 off an Energy Star-rated window or through-the-wall unit. However, some customers who are enrolled in certain savings programs for lower-income customers or seniors could be eligible for up to $275 off a window, wall or portable unit.

Why it matters: It's hot! Also, nearly a third of rental units in Los Angeles don't have air conditioning. And in many of the densely populated neighborhoods of L.A., the proximity of buildings combined with the lack of green spaces can amplify the effects of heat waves.

How to sign up: You can find more information about eligibility at LADWP's "Cool L.A" website. There's also a marketplace where you can shop for units that qualify for the rebate.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive before year-end will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
