About the heat warnings

Weather forecasts have issued several heat warnings across the Southland — they apply to the Inland Empire, western San Gabriel Mountains and the Highway 14 corridor. High heat will continue until 8 p.m. Expect high temperatures in the upper 90s to 107 degrees.

Excessive heat will continue through Friday evening for the high and low deserts — expect highs of up to 112 degrees for the low desert, and up to 105 degrees in the high desert.

Tips to stay cool

  • Kiddie pool
  • Lotions in the fridge
  • Eat spicy foods in the basement (or on the floor) while wearing a damp shirt and listening to the rain setting on your white noise machine
  • Make sure ceiling fans are running counterclockwise
  • Wet paper towels. Fold into ankle and wrist cuffs. Freeze. Wear. Repeat.
  • Build a DIY AC
  • Build a mini cold air fan
  • Build an "evaporative cooler for immediate heat relief"
  • Make a barricade of fans and ice cubes
  • Go to an air-conditioned store and browse for as long as possible (Target is a good option for this).
  • Close all the curtains, preferably the heat-absorbing kind
  • Or open all the windows, depending on the breeze situation
  • Cool bath or shower twice a day
  • Wash your sheets before bed but don't dry them — put them on your bed damp (provided you're dealing with a dry heat)
  • Portable A/C unit

Things to do

  • $10 Pizzas: After-school special alert! Former Olivetta chef Michael Fiorelli’s pop-up pizza hotspot Fiorelli is serving up $10 cheese pies from 3 to 5 p.m. every Thursday. Bring the kids and settle in for a sunny afternoon in the Cook’s Garden to enjoy your pizza alongside the resident chickens.
