    Quick Facts
      • Today’s weather: Scorching, sunny
      • Beaches: 75-81
      • Mountains: 90s-100s
      • Inland: 90s-100s
      • Deserts: 110s-120s
      • Warnings and advisories: Excessive heat warning

Good morning. It's Wednesday, which means we are halfway to the weekend! In today's forecast, the heat is rising along the coast, valleys, inland — basically everywhere except the deserts.

Daytime highs for the beaches will be slightly warmer, between 77 and 81 degrees for most areas except for Santa Monica where you can expect a high of 75 degrees. Patchy and dense fog will cover the coast until 9 a.m. Inland coast will be in the upper 80s and low 90s.

Valley highs are increasing up to 108 degrees in the hottest areas, and up to 111 degrees for the Inland Empire.

Orange County inland areas will range between 94 to 97 degrees.

The high desert will see daytime temperatures between 104 to 115 degrees, and between 112 and 120 for the low desert.

Forecasters say the excessive heat warnings for the valleys and inland areas will last through Thursday evening and now Friday for the deserts.

The risk of wildfires continues to grow as the heat wave continues. The risk will be greatest come Thursday and Friday especially for the mountains and valleys. Forecasters say northwest winds will continue over the I-5 corridor and Santa Barbara county.

The South Coast AQMD has issued a Wildfire Smoke Advisory until 5 p.m. this afternoon due to the Lake and Vista fires.

    Staying safe in the heat
      • Don't wait until you're thirsty to drink water or electrolyte-replacements
      • Drink cool water, not extremely cold water (which can cause cramps)
      • Avoid sweetened drinks, caffeine, and alcohol
    • Protect a pet from excessive heat

      • Never leave a pet or animal in a garage
      • Never leave a pet or animal in a vehicle
      • Never leave a pet or animal in the sun
      • Provide shade
      • Provide clean drinking water
    • Protect a human from excessive heat

    • Check in frequently with family, friends, and neighbors. Offer assistance or rides to those who are sick or have limited access to transportation. And give extra attention to people most at risk, including:

      • Elderly people (65 years and older)
      • Infants
      • Young children
      • People with chronic medical conditions
      • People with mental illness
      • People taking certain medications (i.e.: "If your doctor generally limits the amount of fluid you drink or has you on water pills, ask how much you should drink while the weather is hot," says the CDC)

    Things to do

    • Venice Backgammon Club + Live Jazz: Backgammon may conjure up images of old men playing outside coffee shops or in grandma’s living room, but one local club is proving the ancient game is anything but. The Venice Backgammon Club has been hosting events that keep growing in popularity and the easy-to-learn but hard-to-master game is quickly becoming a fun way to meet new people and check out new spots. This week’s event also features live jazz at the Venice West.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
