Tonight's lows will drop between 38 to 42 degrees.

Given the cold snap, don't forget we've got a handy guide for how to keep heat from escaping your home.

About those advisories

Coastal flooding and high surf

Be careful at the beaches these next few days as more high surf and minor coastal flooding will affect SoCal Beaches.

A coastal flood advisory has been issued for Orange and Los Angeles county beaches, including Catalina Island and the Malibu coast where low-lying areas such as parking lots and roads will see some flooding during morning high tide through noon Thursday.

Starting Wednesday a high surf advisory is in effect — expect large breaking waves of 5 to 8 feet at Orange and L.A. county beaches, including dangerous rip currents. West-facing beaches will see the highest surf where up to 9 feet sets are expected.

Freeze/frost advisories

Santa Clarita Valley, Woodland Hills and Van Nuys are under a frost advisory until 10 a.m.

Meanwhile, San Bernardino and Riverside county valleys are experiencing subfreezing temperatures as low as 27 degrees until 9 a.m.

This day in history

On this day in 2017 a strong mountain wave produced a wind gust up to 107 mph in Burns Canyon, east of the San Bernardino mountains.

Things to do

Enjoy some indoor storytelling on this chilly night.

  • 'Mercury' (Opening Night): Director Ann Hearn Tobolowsky gives her take on the Steve Yockey-written play, Mercury. Three stories cross outside of Portland, Oregon in a black comedy featuring an illicit affair, a couple hanging on by a thread, bears at the window, the worst curiosity shop on the West Coast, and a missing dog named Mr. Bundles.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
