LA’s free recycled water station is back

A person with a medium skin tone and yellow vest on crouches down to fill up small blue containers with a hose that shoots out water.

Topline:

You can once again pick up recycled water in Los Angeles for free. The LADWP’s refill station at the Los Angeles-Glendale Water Reclamation Plant is the only location back open for the year.

How does recycled water help? It’s a way you can conserve water during the drought. Instead of using your home’s water supply on your lawn or garden, you can safely replace it with recycled water, which is treated and disinfected wastewater.

How does the program work? Only LADWP customers are eligible. You must bring one of your bills from the utility and a government issued ID. You’ll complete a short training at the site once and can then get up to 300 gallons per visit, using your own water-tight lid containers. You can find container suggestions here.

How long will it be open? This location will stay open through Dec. 31, according to LADWP spokesperson Renee Vazquez. If demand rises, the utility may open more locations. The Los Angeles-Glendale spot is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Thursday and Friday.

At LAist, we believe in journalism without censorship and the right of a free press to speak truth to those in power. Our hard-hitting watchdog reporting on local government, climate, and the ongoing housing and homelessness crisis is trustworthy, independent and freely accessible to everyone thanks to the support of readers like you.

But the game has changed: Congress voted to eliminate funding for public media across the country. Here at LAist that means a loss of $1.7 million in our budget every year. We want to assure you that despite growing threats to free press and free speech, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust. Speaking frankly, the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news in our community.

We’re asking you to stand up for independent reporting that will not be silenced. With more individuals like you supporting this public service, we can continue to provide essential coverage for Southern Californians that you can’t find anywhere else. Become a monthly member today to help sustain this mission.

Thank you for your generous support and belief in the value of independent news.
