Tonight's 'California'-Themed Bagavagabonds Art Explosion to Raise Funds for Room 13 L.A.

With our free press under threat and federal funding for public media gone, your support matters more than ever. Help keep the LAist newsroom strong, become a monthly member or increase your support today during our fall member drive.

If you're still looking for something to do tonight but can't decide between art, food, charity and music choices, check out the Bagavagabonds Art Explosion, where you'll find all of the above. The theme for this Art Explosion is California, and scores of art pieces will be available for sale via silent auction, with prices starting at $10. All art and admission proceeds from tonight's event will go directly to Room 13 L.A., which mentors art students from South Central's Foshay Learning Center.

The students have been closely involved with this event. For the past six weeks they've worked on postcard and poster designs, and 35 of these pieces will be for sale at tonight's show. Said Izzy Holden of the Bagavagabonds, "We're pumped to be working with these students and 15-20 of them will be on hand at the event—helping with screen printing and assisting with the silent auction—giving the show a full-circle communal feel!"

The Art Explosion will take place tonight, June 18, from 7 p.m. - 1 a.m. in the Arts Continuum at 1947 S. Santa Fe Ave. in downtown Los Angeles. Street parking will be available on 11th St. and 15th St. The $12 entrance donation includes food, drinks, mini-golf, adventures in the Velcro photo booth, music and more. For more information, visit the Bagavagabonds' website.

At LAist, we believe in journalism without censorship and the right of a free press to speak truth to those in power. Our hard-hitting watchdog reporting on local government, climate, and the ongoing housing and homelessness crisis is trustworthy, independent and freely accessible to everyone thanks to the support of readers like you.

But the game has changed: Congress voted to eliminate funding for public media across the country. Here at LAist that means a loss of $1.7 million in our budget every year. We want to assure you that despite growing threats to free press and free speech, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust. Speaking frankly, the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news in our community.

We’re asking you to stand up for independent reporting that will not be silenced. With more individuals like you supporting this public service, we can continue to provide essential coverage for Southern Californians that you can’t find anywhere else. Become a monthly member today to help sustain this mission.

Thank you for your generous support and belief in the value of independent news.
