  • On Thursday night, CalArts presented its annual Character Animation Producers' Show, which showcased some of the best of the best from this year's students. Twenty-three cool, inventive and oftentimes funny shorts played to a packed audience at the Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre in North Hollywood. Pixar director, Oscar winner, and alum Pete Docter (Up) gave out the awards this year, telling students this will be "the last time you get one-hundred percent creative control."...
  • Space Out: It's time to visit NASA. This weekend is the popular, two-day JPL Open House celebrating "accomplishments with exhibits and demonstrations about the Laboratory's ongoing research and space exploration." Parking is free. Admission is free.
  • Trust me when I tell you this: you know someone who does it. That shiny object sticking out of your best friend’s bag? Knitting needles. That weird stick you found in your sister’s (or brother’s) drawer? Crochet hook. The funny spool of pink thread you saw tucked up into the bookshelf? Classic sign of a DIY seamstress or tailor. Fabric and yarn based crafting is everywhere, and the reasons for its popularity may be different than what you expect. So why do we do it?

  • Bo Foxworth in "The Malcontent." Photo - Geoffrey Wade The revelatory thing about productions of older plays is that age doesn't necessarily make a show dated--the human verities remain constant--and great art shrugs off accumulated centuries like water drops. The flip side of this, however, is that just because a play happens to be ancient and obscure, it isn't necessarily a classic. The Antaeus Company's raison d'etre is to shine a light on underappreciated...
  • Next week, it's time to bust out your big two-wheeler and celebrate your freedom to ride. That's right -- it's LA's 17th annual bike week, during which the city will encourage riding, celebrate new programs designed to make biking easier and offer up some incentives for you to hit the pavement on your Schwinn instead of your Honda.
  • The Dirty Fabulous's 'Horseman of the Apocalypse' at New Puppy Gallery (Photo: Ad Hoc Art. • Ian Nelson with Juju the lamb in 'Curse of the Starving Class.' (Photo by Maia Rosenfeld) Sam Shepard's dark melodrama Curse of the Starving Class is currently playing at Open Fist Theatre on Hollywood's Theatre Row. Shepard uses biographical references to his own childhood on an avocado-and-sheep ranch in Duarte, CA as a device to highlight the virtual impossibility for social mobility in the United States. Through tragic and utterly unstable characters, the play...

  • Adam Goldberg is best known as an actor in the war epic Saving Private Ryan--or, going back a bit farther, for his role as a bumbling yet endearing nerd in Dazed and Confused. Goldberg is a self-proclaimed man of all trades, including a purveyor of fine meats, and most recently embarked on the musical venture The Goldberg Sisters. The band appears tonight at the Bootleg Theater as part of a musical lineup that dares you to “put your money where you mouth is.”
