  • August is winding down, and with it, the impenetrable highs of summer. Soon it will be chilly at night and everyone will be saving their money for Christmas, so make this week count. Get out, see shows, and laugh like no one's watching. That's the saying, right?
  • Remember on Friday we told you about Laurel Miller, the woman who was so moved by the documentary Senna she decided to spend $1250 of her own money to buy tickets for 100 strangers? We heard from Miller today, who told us that she had a really great turnout, and the film was well-received.
  • In 1988, President Ronald Reagan declared August 21 National Senior Citizens Day. He intended it to be a day when we recognize the contributions of our elders, spend a little time with them, and generally be good people, because those are the kinds of things that good people do.
  • IT'S THE MOMENT WE'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR: Kim Kardashian married her Prince Charming, Kris Humphries, at a private estate in Montecito last night. As we all recall, Humphries, a professional basketball player who played last season for the Nets, gifted Kardashian with a 20-carat, $2 million ring in May. The two had been dating only six months, but Kim, of course, has been dying to get married for years now.
  • Not only is every one of the five bank tellers featured in "Next Window, Please," competent enough to keep her job, but they're also all really fine women who don't deserve to become unemployed. Unfortunately three of them are about to get laid off. Which three is it going to be, who's going to decide, and how is the decision going to be made? If you're already hooked, you should definitely go see Doug Haverty's new play at the Lonny Chapman Theatre in North Hollywood.
  • It began one day in June when Emily Green was — like any water politics reporter worth her salt — wandering through Vroman's looking for books about the history of the Los Angeles County Flood Control Division. She stumbled across "The Ripple Effect" by Alex Prud'homme (who just happens to be the nephew of Julia Child), and as she perused the book, she got a "queasy" feeling.
  • This week's pets are from Much Love Animal Rescue. Juliette is a lover who is soft spoken and sweet. Veronica is a lovely, wonderful, adorable, easy Jack Russel Terrier mix who needs a forever home. She is a nice dog with a medium energy level who gets along with everyone, even cats.
  • It's a remake rumble this weekend, as two R-rated redos go toe to toe. Lionsgate comes out swinging with Conan the Barbarian, while Dreamworks & Disney don't want you to sleep on Fright Night.
  • Sing along with the Rat Pack, find fresh hell at Zombie Joe's, brush up on your gay hist-orgy, and an art exhibit opening are just a few fun things happening in L.A. tonight.
  • It's a busy night in LA and we combed through a lot of listings so you wouldn't have to. Penn of Penn & Teller is in conversation with actor Kevin Pollack at the Writers Guild. The Standard, Hollywood holds a Fashion Spelling Bee. Lucha Vavoom celebrates its 9th year anniversary and a clothing-optional art event. Read on for all the details.
