The Golden Globes Return Under New Management
Topline:
This year's Golden Globes will be the first since the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which has operated the awards since their founding, dissolved after multiple controversies in recent years.
What's new: This is the first time ever that the ceremony, which kicks off the Hollywood awards season, won't be run by the HFPA. Dick Clark Productions and the asset investment company Eldridge took ownership of the Golden Globes brand last year. The awards will also be televised on CBS this year after switching over from NBC.
The Globes have added two new categories this year, one recognizes a film that made a lot of money at the box office. The other new category will honor the year's best stand-up comedy routine.
The backstory: The Golden Globes faced a deluge of controversies in recent years, especially after the Los Angeles Times reported in 2021 that none of its 87 members at the time were Black. Their 2022 ceremony was held, but remained untelevised amid the outcry.
Other controversies: In 2018, actor Brendan Fraser accused HFPA president Philip Berk of groping him 15 years earlier. The L.A. Times also reported that the HFPA encouraged informal pay-to-play policies that may have influenced award votes.
Details: The show, hosted by comedian Jo Koy, starts today at 5 p.m.
