Ohtani makes brief pitching debut as a Dodger — and knocks in 2 runs in 6-3 win over Padres
Dodger fans who patiently waited to watch Shohei Ohtani pitch finally got their wish last night as he took the mound for the first time since signing with the team in 2023.
The backstory
Ohtani has been recovering from elbow surgery he had in the fall of 2023. The two-way superstar faced the San Diego Padres at Dodger Stadium. As expected, he did not pitch deep into the game. Ohtani pitched just the first inning, throwing 28 pitches, 16 of them strikes.
Ahead of his debut Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told the Associated Press: “He’s ready, he’s adamant, he feels good, strong, ready to pitch a major league game. I think everyone in that clubhouse, I think the fans, media, we’ve been waiting for this moment.”
How'd he do?
Ultimately, the Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 6-3. Ohtani allowed an early run, but made up for it with two clutch hits.
After the game, Ohtani said he was grateful for the support that got him healthy and pitching again. While he said he was "not quite happy with the results," he added: "There was a lot I was able to take away from today's outing and today's game."

Why it matters
His return is considered exceptional since pitchers returning from a major injury typically go to throw in the minor league for rehab.
