Recent Netflix Numbers Reveal What's Actually Hitting On The Dominant Streamer
Topline:
Netflix released all of its viewership data from the second half of 2023 just before Memorial Day weekend. An analysis by The Ankler combined this info with the streamer’s January-June 2023 dataset to tease out the top films of 2023 in a number of ways.
Why it matters: Netflix is the world’s largest streaming service, with almost 270 million global subscribers. It is both a significant producer and buyer of movies, meaning that it has an outsize influence on the overall film industry.
The great babysitter: Animated films for kids made by traditional studios and released in theaters before streaming on Netflix are incredibly valuable thanks to their extremely high viewership totals. The most viewed chart is dominated by films from Illumination, DreamWorks Animation, Sony and Paramount. Some of them, such as Shrek, are more than 20 years old and are much more popular than the Netflix original animated movies which are not heavily marketed like a traditional film.
Awards, not engagement: Netflix’s high-profile prestige films that are submitted for awards such as the Oscars often do not reach a wide audience, nor do they have a long shelf life after awards season. Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, for example, which received a lot of press and significant marketing, attracted just 6.7 million viewers after its December 2023 debut on Netflix.
