Best things to do this weekend in Los Angeles and Southern California: September 13 - 15

Hispanic Heritage Month and PST ART all kick off on Sunday — and at times they have events that even coincide, with LA Plaza Cultura y Artes hosting events for both celebrations. There’s also the East L.A. Mexican Independence Day Parade and an event honoring legendary 1930s film star and opera singer José Mojica.
We were already awash in a ton of great exhibits this summer and now with PST launching, everywhere from big museums like the Getty and LACMA to smaller ones like the Wende to galleries and community spaces will be exploring the question "Can Art Keep Us Connected?"
Plus, it’s easy to forget that L.A. and Long Beach make up the country’s busiest port, but this weekend is your chance to get up close and personal with the harbor by taking a free boat tour and getting in-depth explanations of how it all works. Also, P!nk plays Dodger Stadium, and there’s a mezcal fest in Cypress Park.
For more to explore, visit LAist.com where you can read up on your favorite Korean TV shows, learn about an art show at the Orange County courthouse from Cheech Marin’s personal collection, and grab your tickets for our event with Fran Lebowitz on Sept. 25.

The tours take you through the inner workings of the nation’s busiest port, including active vessels, cargo terminals and cranes. But it’s not just infrastructure. In addition to cargo and cruise ships, tugs, barges and fireboats, visitors can often see active marine wildlife. The tours show a unique perspective of L.A. Harbor, showcasing both sides of the Vincent Thomas Bridge. Can’t make it down there? Two livestream cameras give a sneak peek. Advance reservations are recommended and can be made here.

Art world legend Hans Ulrich Obrist knows his stuff — and after curating more than 350 shows, he should. He is the artistic director of the Serpentine Galleries in London’s Kensington Gardens and will be in L.A. to discuss artist Gustav Metzger’s first-ever Los Angeles exhibition as part of PST. Metzer’s work bridges art and science and activism, so the conversation is sure to be lively, and lunch (if this heat breaks!) in the garden at Manuela after is always a fun treat.

More than 70 exhibits, films, and talks are part of this year’s PST ART collaborative, helmed by the Getty and incorporating shows at institutions throughout Southern California during the fall. This year’s theme is “Can art keep us connected?” so expect a variety of takes on art, science, AI technology and more. One of the first events on opening weekend (coinciding with the start of Hispanic Heritage Month on Sunday) is at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, which is serving as a PST ART Community Hub. There are activities all weekend long, including workshops, performances, two exhibits, food vendors, tours and more.
Check out the full schedule of PST and plan your art-full fall! I’m hoping to check out many of these and will certainly highlight more in the column in the coming weeks.

Ask and you shall receive. On the 30th anniversary of Complexions Ballet Company, the troupe is putting a contemporary spin on classical ballet and reinterpreting the Irish lads’ latest release for the stage. Dwight Rhoden has put together an immersive dance piece – titled “For Crying Out Loud” – with 16 performers that push boundaries.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.
Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.
We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.
No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.
Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
