Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

The Dodgers are World Series-bound! But Game 1 against the Yankees isn’t till Friday, so here are some great events to keep you entertained in the meantime.

Get inspired by author Richard Powers and his take on the oceans that connect us at Live Talks, check out a new Alice Neel exhibit at the beautiful (and massive!) new David Zwirner gallery in Melrose Hill, or get your fill of thrills at the Hitchcock retrospective showing Dial M For Murder and more at the Nuart. There’s also a chance to help build a Rose Parade float (!!), experience some avant-garde performance art and try a haunted cocktail.

For more to explore, visit LAist.com where you can meet the local woman who’s tried 40 breakfast burritos — it’s not me, but it probably could be. Plus learn what’s being done to curb the local risk of dengue. And I just loved this article about what the L.A. Zoo is doing to honor pets who’ve crossed the Rainbow Bridge and how you can honor them this upcoming Dia de los Muertos.

There’s more than one good reason to get out to see the Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra at 2220 Arts. First off, the organization has been an incubator of talent, with more than 300 innovative musicians playing in the group since the '70s – and this is a chance to catch them in a smaller space, ahead of their performance next month as part of Noon to Midnight at Disney Hall. But it’s also an opportunity to help support their musical director, Mekala Session, who’s facing eviction from his studio space and is holding this event as a fundraiser. The night will feature selections of music videos filmed in the garage of Session's home, which also serves as the rehearsal space of the band.

The recently expanded David Zwirner Gallery is hosting a new exhibit curated by New Yorker critic Hilton Als about the painter Alice Neel and her long history of painting people from all walks of life, including many in the queer community. The expansive show, At Home: Alice Neel in the Queer World, includes paintings of politicians, philanthropists, writers, performers, artists, friends, and neighbors.

There are only a few books that I can say really changed how I thought about an issue and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Richard Powers’ 2018 book The Overstory – about trees and their unique relationship to us and our environment – was one of them. Powers’ new book, Playground, moves focus to the oceans by following four intertwining stories that look at our shared humanity and relationship to the waters that connect us. He will be in conversation with fellow novelist Steph Cha at Live Talks.

The float features a dozen prehistoric dinosaurs frolicking among a floral landscape beneath an active volcano. Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty and make sure you’re wearing closed-toed shoes!

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
