With our free press under threat and federal funding for public media gone, your support matters more than ever. Help keep the LAist newsroom strong, become a monthly member or increase your support today.

Well, L.A., we’ve entered our charity benefit concert era. While no one wants to need a charity benefit for their city, if there’s a silver lining to any of this, it’s the way the community — and this week, I’m talking about the music community — has come out to support Los Angeles in the wake of the fires.

If you didn’t luck out with a ticket for the heavy hitters — from Lady Gaga to Billie Eilish to Sting to Stevie Nicks — at FireAid on Thursday at the Kia Forum and Intuit Dome, have no fear. First off, it’s being streamed on many major platforms, but more importantly, there are excellent smaller benefit shows at the Lodge Room (featuring Lord Huron) and the Bellwether and every venue in between every night this week; comedy benefits like Bill Burr and Shane Gillis at the Wiltern, and many more than I have room to list.

Don’t feel like going out? Support artists in L.A. by buying one of the 40 unique prints for sale at the White Label Editions auction, online through Feb. 20.

For more to explore, visit LAist.com, where you can find out how to sign up for 90 days of free Metro rides if you’ve been affected by the fires, learn how to help regrow the Altadena seed library, and of course, check which Oscar movies you need to see now that the nominations are out.

At LAist, we believe in journalism without censorship and the right of a free press to speak truth to those in power. Our hard-hitting watchdog reporting on local government, climate, and the ongoing housing and homelessness crisis is trustworthy, independent and freely accessible to everyone thanks to the support of readers like you.

But the game has changed: Congress voted to eliminate funding for public media across the country. Here at LAist that means a loss of $1.7 million in our budget every year. We want to assure you that despite growing threats to free press and free speech, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust. Speaking frankly, the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news in our community.

We’re asking you to stand up for independent reporting that will not be silenced. With more individuals like you supporting this public service, we can continue to provide essential coverage for Southern Californians that you can’t find anywhere else. Become a monthly member today to help sustain this mission.

Thank you for your generous support and belief in the value of independent news.
