Best things to do Thanksgiving week in Los Angeles and Southern California: November 25 - 28

Casey Kauffmann is an artist who uses Instagram and gifs to reflect our current social media culture back to us, and her work is featured in the new exhibit at LACMA, Digital Witness. I keep thinking about her piece, “It’s Over Bitch,” which takes a pyramid of old TVs and loops images on the screens – like the MTV logo and a clip from Jennifer’s Body. It’s provocative, nostalgic, and funny all at once. While the Digital Witness show made me feel old (there’s a Mac Plus computer in a glass case), it pairs recent artifacts of the digital age with recognizable moments from film innovation, new pieces from artists responding to pop culture, and a look back on the evolution of digital imagery, from typesetting to Photoshop. It’s here until July, so you have plenty of time to take family and friends over the holidays or anytime in the first half of the new year.
Beyond the great access to art and artists that we have, a few other L.A. things I’m grateful for this year include Jyan Isaac and his breads that rival the best bakeries in Paris, the Dodgers (obviously), Evan Lovett’s L.A. in a Minute history lessons, my new favorite farmer’s market discovery – chocolate persimmons, and of course, you, all of our loyal LAist readers and members.
For more to explore, visit LAist.com to read about the history of the Henson Studios on La Brea, get the first look at Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Disneyland, and learn about the San Clemente surf shop collecting boards for young native Mexicans living along the Baja coast.

'Pacific Overtures'
-
East West Players at Union Center for the Arts
120 Judge John Aiso St., Little Tokyo
East West Players just extended the run of Pacific Overtures through Dec. 8, so you have a few more chances to catch the Sondheim musical at the Asian-American theater company’s home stage in Little Tokyo. The vintage 1976 show may not be Sondheim’s most well-known, but the musical, about Japan's westernization following a period of isolationism, was the first to play at East West Players back in 1979.
This iteration features well-reviewed performances from West End vet Jon Jon Briones (The Reciter) and Gedde Watanabe. On Monday’s Anime Night, attendees dressed in cosplay will get a free drink and enjoy a photo opportunity on the red carpet.

'Digital Witness'
-
LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art)
5905 Wilshire Blvd., Mid-Wilshire
If you’re a St. Vincent fan, you’ll be humming “Digital Witness” all the way through the Digital Witness: Revolutions in Design, Photography and Film exhibit at LACMA. Yes, the show made me feel old (there’s a Mac Plus computer in a glass case), but it pairs recent artifacts of the digital age with recognizable moments from film innovation, new pieces from artists responding to pop culture, and a look back on the evolution of digital imagery, from typesetting to Photoshop. During the pandemic, I discovered Giovanni, a lovely older man who lives in the Valley and makes the most incredible tiramisu – and delivers it right to your door. We’d order it as a special treat and it would stay in our freezer for a little pick-me-up during those dark days. Have a tiramisu (or cannoli) delivered for your Thanksgiving feast and swap a pie for some Italian deliciousness. There’s even a gluten-free option.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.
Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.
We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.
No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.
Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
