Best things to do this week in Los Angeles and Southern California: February 18 - 20

I’m back from a week with no internet (bliss, truly, highly recommend), happy to be home in time for one of my favorite seasons of the year in L.A. — art month. Thanks to the growth of the Frieze Art Fair, there are art events everywhere you turn the next couple of weeks and it’s a great chance to learn about all kinds of creators and enjoy excellent fashion and people-watching everywhere you turn.
To get you in the mood — or just to get out your frustrations — take a minute to check out artist Shin Yin Khor’s (Sawdust Bear) installation in Silver Lake of a “Communal Scream Button” if it’s all just become too much. It’s up and active “until the batteries run out.”

Comedy show benefitting Public Displays of Altadena
-
Sierra Madre Playhouse
87 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre
The first show is sold out, but there are still tickets left for the late show benefitting the much beloved Public Displays of Altadena, a 35-seat “micro-theater” that lost its venue (but not its spirit!) in the wildfires. Comedians, including PDA regulars Melissa Villaseñor (Saturday Night Live) and Maria Bamford, take the stage alongside a host of friends in an evening celebrating comedy and community.

'Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends'
-
Ahmanson Theatre
135 N. Grand Ave., Downtown L.A.
It’s not every day we get treated to Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga, two grand dames of modern Broadway, on one stage. This big, showy Sondheim revue is a crowdpleaser that first opened in London’s West End and heads to Broadway next, but for now, L.A.’s Broadway babies are here for it.
Come for Salonga belting out “Everything’s Coming up Roses” (from Gypsy) and Peters’ heartfelt and sad “Send in the Clowns” (from A Little Night Music), stay for the strong supporting cast and their comic renditions of “Agony” (from Into the Woods), “The Best Pies in London” (from Sweeney Todd) and many more favorites. If you’ve been affected by the fires, free tickets are being made available to all Center Theater Group shows.

Felix Art Fair (Feb. 19-23)
L.A. Art Show (Feb. 19-23)
Other Art Fair (Feb. 20-23)
Art Week at Neuehouse (Feb. 18-21)Ahead of the big Frieze Art Fair, February has slowly but surely turned into art month around Los Angeles, with several big art fairs capitalizing on Frieze’s star power and becoming must-see fine art events in their own right.
Felix Art Fair hits the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel again this week, with events and walkthroughs featuring a range of artists and collaborators. The L.A. Art Show is the biggest of the events, taking over the L.A. Convention Center with dozens of galleries and artists showing their work. The Other Art Fair features more local and independent artists at the new venue in Atwater Village, including a new segment from artist Judy Baca’s mural "The Great Wall of Los Angeles." And tying it all together with evening fun is Neuehouse, whose Venice space will host three free-with-RSVP music and art events focused on the natural world and feminine leadership in the art space.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.
Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.
We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.
No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.
Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
