Judge Revokes License Of Landlords Investigated by LAist
Regulators have blasted landlord PAMA Management for years, but a fire at a property outside of Oildale, California led to unprecedented scrutiny of the business. That fire killed a 5-month-old girl. Her unit had no carbon monoxide detectors, as required by law.
PAMA — the subject of an LAist investigation earlier this year — showed "a total disregard for the law," a state investigator concluded.
At a Dec. 8 hearing in an L.A. courthouse, Judge Mary Strobel issued her ruling: Revoking the license of corporate cousin Nijjar Realty, Incorporated and longtime PAMA executive Everet Miller “was warranted because [they] did not accept responsibility for their actions and did not demonstrate a commitment to ensure public safety,” she wrote.
The ruling is a significant rebuke. Nijjar Realty has been in business since 1979, and Everet Miller has been a PAMA executive for years. A lawyer for Miller and PAMA owner Mike Nijjar didn't respond to requests for comment.
