Another Child Diagnosed With Covid-Related 'MIS-C' Illness In LA County
Another child in Los Angeles County has been diagnosed with a serious, sometimes deadly, syndrome related to the coronavirus — MIS-C or "Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children."
That brings the total number of children diagnosed with the syndrome to 41, according to county health officials.
Dr. Erica Lawson is a pediatric rheumatologist at UC San Francisco. She says the syndrome can impact the heart, gastrointestinal tract, and can come with a lasting fever, but parents shouldn't worry unless they see clear symptoms:
"One thing that's important to note is that children who have this condition will be pretty sick, they're going to look unwell. So just to help reassure parents a little bit that if your kid doesn't look particularly ill at home, they're not likely to have this condition."
The majority of the sickened children are Latino.
Last week, the Centers for Disease Control issed a report that identified 27 cases of a similar syndrome in adults.
