Mobile wi-fi units will soon be dispatched to densely populated communities in Orange County, where many students don’t have internet access and struggle to keep up with remote learning.

Beginning on Oct. 27, the Wifi on Wheels program will rotate near elementary schools in Westminster and Midway City. The signal can transmit 900 feet or more, and allows up to 150 users to connect at a time.

“In this beginning stage, [we’re gauging] how are these hours working out, how are these locations working out,” said spokesperson David Lopez. “We’ll use the data and make adjustments as needed.”

The program will later expand to Stanton, La Palma, La Habra and San Juan Capistrano.

In Los Angeles, free internet service is becoming available in four South L.A. public housing complexes, and will be accessible to 9,000 residents.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive before year-end will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
