MUSICAL
Rock of Ages—the big hair-band musical comedy about a small town girl (who’s living in a lonely world) meeting a big city rocker In 1987 on the Sunset Strip—opens tonight at the Pantages. The story’s told through the songs of Journey, Bon Jovi, Poison and many more. In the cast of the LA premiere is American Idol finalist Constantine Maroulis who earned a Tony nomination for his role. 8 pm. Tickets: $25-90. Through Feb. 27.RIVER STORIES
Want to learn more about the history and future of the LA River? The Chatauqua Series at Temescal Canyon welcomes environmental writer and LA River advocate Jenny Price to talk about the local river, what it is and what it could be 7:30 pm. Free. Meet in Woodland Hall at Temescal Gateway Park in Pacific Palisades.

THEATER 
There’s a preview tonight for Ligature: An evening of five short plays at The Court Theater at the historic Hollywood United Methodist Church (Highland and Franklin). A little comedy and little tragedy for your Tuesday evening. 8 pm. Runs Tuesdays and Wednesdays through March 8. Preview tickets: $5.

STORIES
The LA Moth StorySLAM happens tonight at El Cid. Storytellers have five minutes to tell their true tales on the theme of Love Hurts love gone wrong. This is not standup and notes are not allowed. 6 pm doors and 7:30 pm stories begin, Tickets: $8 at the door.

THEATER
Jane Fonda makes her return to the stage in 33 Variations, where a Beethoven Scholar tries to solve the genius’ greatest mystery while her own life rumbles around her. The journey spans 200 years and ultimately is a take about life, art and the relationship between mother and daughter. Tonight at 8 pm at the Ahmanson Theatre. Tickets: $35-65.

MUSIC + ART

Singer-songwriter-poet-artist Joseph Arthur continues his month-long residency tonight at the Bootleg Theatre. He's turning the Bootleg into his personal workshop where he'll perform music, paint live onstage to sound loops and curate a new, exhibit of his art every Tuesday night. $12 at the door.
