Pencil This In: Classic Cartoons, Spare Room Party and Racing at Santa Anita

Happy Boxing Day...if you don’t feel like hitting the Target or Macys to return gifts, we found a few other stores with sales that might satisfy the shopping bug, as well as a few events that have nothing to do with either shopping or food. Read on for all the details.

HORSE RACING
Santa Anita opens its 75th winter/spring season today at noon today. The track will be giving away colorful wall calendars so get there early. Santa Anita also introduces mobile wagering via a new Santa Anita Mobile app. Admission: $5-20.

FILM
The Alex Film Society presents The Second Annual Cartoon Hall of Fame Big Screen Event at 2 and 7 pm today. Held at the beautiful Alex Theatre in Glendale, bring the entire family to watch classic cartoons, such as Mickey, Donald, Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, Superman, Daffy Duck, and a few lesser-known characters. Running time is approximately 2 hours 30 minutes with no intermission. Tickets: $12.50-$15.

PARTY WITH A PURPOSE*
Tonight, The Spare Room in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel hosts a Boxing Day Socialwith all proceeds going to the Hospitality Kitchen (aka the “Hippie Kitchen”), a soup kitchen operated on Downtown LA’s Skid Row. A suggested donation of $10 at the door gets you into the event, but if the funds are low, bring blankets, sleeping bags or warm clothes to donate instead. Bottomless punch, bites and a Jenga tournament are all included with admission. Live music by Hobo Jazz and DJ Miss Diana spins the tunes. To also help raise funds, The Spare Room is presenting the First Annual Bartenders with Bar Tabs Auction. 7-11pm
