To do tonight in LA: Films of Ken Jacobs screen at Cinefamily, with the filmmaker in person; wine and jazz at Hollywood and Highland; author of The Magician King signs the book at Vroman's; and there's a sex talk/learning seminar at Meltdown Comics. Read on for all the details.

Tonight Hollywood & Highland’s Wine, Jazz & Moonlight series presents jazz guitarist and composer Brent Canter from 7-9 pm in the Central Courtyard. The event is free to the public (i.e., shoppers) but there’s a $10 wine tasting donation that gets you two glasses of wine and a box of cheese and crackers to enjoy during the performance. Proceeds go to Project Angel Food.

Los Angeles Filmforum and Cinefamily present the program The Intimacy of Intervention - An Evening With Ken Jacobs tonight at 8 pm. Moderated by Jacobs’ son Azazel Jacobs, the elder Jacobs will screen several examples of his classic film and video art. Ken Jacobs has been creating experimental and underground films in NYC for more than 50 years. Tickets: $12.

Lev Grossman discusses and signs The Magician King at Vroman’s tonight at 7 pm. It’s the sequel to his novel The Magicians. The hero of the first novel, Quentin, and his friends “return to the magical land of Fillory as royalty, but the days and nights of luxury and excess quickly become dull.” After an errand goes terribly wrong, things take a sinister turn, and only black, twisted magic can save the hero and friends.
