  • 4 killed on 605 Freeway, major delays
A CHP patrol car blocks lanes of a freeway
A chain reaction crash killed four people overnight Sunday on the 605 Freeway.

    Topline:

Four people were killed when their disabled car was rear-ended early Sunday morning on the southbound 605 Freeway in Norwalk. California Highway Patrol officers arrested the driver who crashed into the vehicle on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Road closure and warning: The southbound 605 is closed between Firestone Boulevard and Rosecrans Avenue. As of Sunday morning, the 605 was backed up to the 5 Freeway. Be aware that there are reports of cars driving the wrong way on both the 5 and the 605 freeways in order to exit.

Details: The CHP says officers responded a little before 1 a.m. to reports of a crash involving one of their patrol vehicles and a Nissan sedan on the southbound 605, north of the 105 Freeway. At that point, the Nissan was disabled and blocking the second lane of the freeway. Authorities say a Kia sedan crashed into the rear of Nissan, which was engulfed in fire with four occupants trapped inside. All four were pronounced dead at the scene.

The CHP says its officers arrested the Kia driver on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Any witnesses to this crash are encouraged to contact the CHP Santa Fe Springs Area office and speak with investigating officer, Officer J. Yoteco or Officer Z. Salazar, at (562) 649-6800.
