Joy Luck Club author Amy Tan joins Rev. Rodrick Echols, pastor at Laguna’s Neighborhood Congregational Church, at this Live Talks L.A. event to discuss her new book, The Backyard Bird Chronicles. Tan, who is on the board of the American Bird Conservancy, shares essays and drawings that reflect on the beauty of the birds all around us.
'A Love Supreme' Listening Session
DJ Black Museumist of Black Museumist Radio at MOCA is your guide for this special listening session honoring John Coltrane’s 1965 masterpiece, A Love Supreme, in Long Beach hosted by Good Luck Vinyl Club. Local avant-garde jazz quartet Mood will also perform live.

'Ghost Waltz'
Oliver Mayer’s new play Ghost Waltz uses magical realism to tell the story of classical Indigenous Mexican composer Juventino Rosas. Rosas’s hidden story weaves through relationships with better-known musicians like Scott Joplin. Deborah Klugman at Stage Raw called the show “ribboned with magic.”
Kraftwerk Residency
German electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk kick off a short residency at Disney Hall, where they will play a complete album from their extensive catalog each night. The last night’s grand finale will feature "groundbreaking works spanning five decades of the Kraftwerk repertoire."
Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder and crew come to the Forum, touring behind their latest and 12th studio album, Dark Matter. Vedder has called the album the band’s “best work to date,” but of course expect to hear the classics from the Seattle grunge pioneers, too.
British-born (but icon of L.A.) artist David Hockney designed the sets for this production of Puccini favorite Turandot two decades ago, and the show returns to L.A. Opera this week at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The L.A. Times digs into the unique history of the set and how it came out of long-time storage for this new revival. Starring Angela Meade in the title role, the opera also features Russell Thomas as her suitor and Guanqun Yu.

David Zwirner 30th Anniversary Celebration
David Zwirner galleries – from downtown L.A. to New York to London – are home to some of the biggest artists of our time and times past. Their massive new space in Melrose Hill opens this week and will celebrate 30 years of supporting artists. The show spans art world's bold-faced names, from photographer Diane Arbus to painter Paul Klee to more modern multimedia artists like Jordan Wolfson and dozens more.

Kismet restaurant founders and cookbook authors Sara Kramer and Sarah Hymanson are talking with none other than comedian of the moment Kate Berlant — just off her mega sold-out show at Pasadena Playhouse earlier this year — at one of the best bookstores in L.A., Now Serving. The duo bring to life their unique spin on Mediterranean cuisine in their book, also called Kismet, and will talk about recipes (like their famed salty-sweet persimmon salad and their chicken that launched a whole separate restaurant), entrepreneurship, and writing with Berlant, followed by a meet and greet with fans.
