There Is A Giant X-Wing Parked On Hollywood Boulevard

One year ago, Congress defunded public media. Now that we're 100% community funded, please become a sustaining member or increase your existing membership today.

We recently reported that there's a whole week of street closures happening in Hollywood, all done in the name of the new Rogue One premiere.

We were a little confused as to why it'd take seven days to prep for a single movie premiere (even if that film happens to be a Star Wars offshoot). Now, we’re getting a clearer picture of the scope of the festivities, as a bonafide X-wing has just landed on Hollywood Boulevard. The starfighter, famously flown by Luke Skywalker, was first spotted on Tuesday night:

And then the grand reveal happened sometime on Wednesday:

There are other preparations underway for the premiere, of course, which will happen on Saturday at the Pantages Theater:

We're pretty sure that the X-wing is far from being street legal. But we checked in with the city's Department of Transportation anyway, and they told LAist that it's all good. "We currently have no prohibitions on spacecrafts landing on Hollywood Boulevard," said LADOT spokesperson Bruce Gillman.

Hollywood Boulevard will be closed between Ivar Avenue and Vine, and Vine and Argyle Street in both directions from Monday until the following Tuesday. Check our earlier write-upfor a full listing of closures.

One year ago, Congress voted to defund public media, eliminating a critical $1.7 million from our budget every year going forward. But they couldn’t silence us, and we’re not going anywhere. LAist is now 100% community funded and that means we’re taking our future into our own hands and turning to you to keep local reporting strong.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our nonprofit newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our communities. We are free to follow facts wherever they lead and to hold power to account without fear or favor. Our only loyalty is to our readers and listeners and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen Southern California’s communities.
