LAst Night's Action: Lakers Lose Thrice
Orlando Magic defeat LA Lakers 96-94. The last time the Lakers lost three games in a row was January 23, 2008 to January 27, 2008 in road games at San Antonio and Dallas and a home game against Cleveland. Four days later the Lakers traded for Pau Gasol, and any lengthy losing streaks came to an end. Until this game. This hard fought game barely went to the Magic as Kobe Bryant’s last second jumper clanged off the rim falling into Vince Carter’s hands. Magic’s Matt Barnes and Kobe battled the entire game with both being called for a double technical foul in the third quarter. Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard had their battle with Gasol being called for a flagrant-one foul in the fourth quarter. Kobe, despite showing up to the arena late due to an intestinal illness, led all scorers with 34 points while Gasol added 20. Ron Artest, who had eight points and six rebounds, displayed a new bleached blonde look with the word “defense” dyed in purple written in Hebrew, Hindi and Japanese.
Montreal Canadiens defeat Anaheim Ducks 4-3 (SO). The Ducks controlled the game deep into the third period leading 3-1, but the Canadiens got goals from Brian Gionta and Andrei Markov in the final two minutes of regulation to force overtime. Although the Ducks had good scoring chances in overtime but Canadiens goalie Jaroslav Halak did an excellent job stopping all chances. In the third round of the shootout, the Ducks seemed to have won when it looked like goalie Jonas Hiller stopped the shot by Gionta, but Hiller couldn’t find the puck that was lodged between his body and arm and allowed it to fall through the line. That set up the stage for Tomas Plekanec to get the winning goal in the shootout. While the Ducks did get a point for the game, if they hope to catch up and get a playoff spot they need two points in each home game to have any chance.
