Update: Eva Vives plumbs her past for 'All About Nina'

The writer-director called on some of her own experiences for the semi-autobiographical film about a troubled standup comic; diversity in Hollywood is depicted as writers are asked to #ShowUsYourRoom; the soundtrack for 'The House with a Clock in its Walls' makes use of a vintage instrument.

'nina': THE DARKNESS BEHIND her humor

[STARTS AT 8:59]

The new movie, "All About Nina," tells the story of an acerbic standup comic (Mary Elizabeth Winstead in the title role) who moves from New York to Los Angeles to audition for an SNL-like sketch comedy show. Prone to flashes of anger and self-destructive habits, we slowly learn that Nina's raw comedy is in part a mask for pain caused by past trauma. "All About Nina" is a semi-autobiographical story written and directed by Eva Vives. While Vives has worked for years in the film business, primarily as a screenwriter (she co-wrote the acclaimed indie film "Raising Victor Vargas"), "All About Nina" is her feature directorial debut. Vives spoke with John Horn about the inspiration behind the film and what it was like for her to write standup comedy for the first time.

SOCIAL MEDIA DEPICTS DIVERSITY IN HOLLYWOOD

[STARTS AT 1:00]

There’s a new inclusion initiative on Twitter and Instagram called #ShowUsYourRoom. Founded by Amanda Idoko, a writer on the animated show, “Central Park,” the initiative asks show runners to post photographs of their writers' rooms to illustrate below-the-line diversity or lack thereof. So far, nearly 40 shows have posted photos, including “This Is Us” and Mindy Kaling’s “Four Weddings and a Funeral.” Idoko chats with John Horn.

The top movie at the box office last weekend was “The House with a Clock in its Walls,” a family-friendly, gothic-horror movie starring Jack Black and Cate Blanchett. If you were one of the many people who bought a ticket, you unknowingly heard a piece of movie history. The Frame contributor Tim Greiving explains.
