There's Always More to the Story
(Starts at 8:15)
For more than 14 years, filmmaker Sacha Gervasi and actor Peter Dinklage have been trying to get a film made about Hervé Villechaize, the French actor who played Tattoo on the TV show, "Fantasy Island." Now it's a reality. "My Dinner With Hervé" debuts on HBO this week. The two men recently spoke with John Horn to talk about the story they tell and why they were compelled to tell it. It's based on Gervasi's experience as a young reporter from a British newspaper, sent to Los Angeles to write a funny, Where-are-they-now? story about Villechaize. What happened was that the actor poured out the story of his life, complete with painful memories of physical "treatments" for his dwarfism and rejection by his mother. Soon after Gervasi returned to London, Villechaize killed himself. For Dinklage this was a challenge in that he's never played a real person before.
