"Green Book," set in the early 1960s, is based on the real-life friendship between Tony Lip (born Frank Anthony Vallelonga), a rough-around-the-edges bouncer at the Copacabana nightclub, and Don Shirley, a celebrated African-American jazz pianist and composer. In 1962, when Shirley set out on a tour of the Jim Crow-era South, he hired Lip as a driver. The title "Green Book" refers to "The Negro Motorist Green Book," an annual guidebook for African-Americans that listed where they could safely eat and sleep. Mahershala Ali plays Don Shirley and Viggo Mortensen plays Tony Lip in the film, which was directed by Peter Farrelly. When Mortensen spoke with The Frame, he explained why he was reluctant to take on the role at first, before he met Tony's son Nick Vallelonga, who co-wrote the film.
