Inside An Ill-Fated Campaign

(Starts at 7:43)

With 23 candidates vying for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020, it’s easy to lose track of who’s in the race. Filmmaker David Modigliani didn’t know he was following one of those candidates when he set out to document Beto O’Rourke’s 2018 U.S. Senate campaign in Texas (and subsequent loss to Republican incumbent Ted Cruz) for the HBO film “Running With Beto.” John Horn talks with Modigliani about pitching the film to O’Rourke, building trust with him and his family, and what his campaign means for national politics.

Adieu, Cannes

(Starts at :45)

The Cannes Film Festival has ended, with the top prize going to a movie from Korea, but there was plenty of love for the latest from Quentin Tarantino and Pedro Almodóvar. Alissa Wilkinson of Vox.com fills John in on what she saw in France.

One of the defining songs of that moment was “California Dreamin’” by The Mamas and The Papas. But as The Frame contributor Tim Greiving explains, it’s a song that transcended its era.
