The Korean boy band performed two shows to loud audiences, cementing its place in the global pop music world; filmmaker Mike Mills made an unlikely collaboration with the band, The National; the Write Girl program gives teen girls a boost.

The wildly popular Korean boy band, BTS, performed two shows at the Rose Bowl over the weekend. The audience was mainly Korean and Korean-American, but not exclusively, which speaks to the group's crossover appeal. L.A. Times pop music critic August Brown was there and he chats with John Horn about the scene.

Mike Mills makes a National movie

In 2017, filmmaker Mike Mills emailed The National about making a film inspired by the band's music. He ended up making the film and, despite having no musical expertise, producing their next album. "I Am Easy to Find" is a 24-minute film that stars Academy Award-winner Alicia Vikander. It’s also a highly-collaborative 68-minute album. The 16 tracks are cinematic and varied, featuring performances by Gail Ann Dorsey, Lisa Hannigan, Eve Owen, Sharon Van Etten and The Brooklyn Youth Choir. John Horn spoke with Mills and The National’s Matt Berninger about their collaborative process.

Teen girls with the Write Stuff

There’s a mentoring program in Hollywood called Write Girl — yes, with a "W" — and it pairs actors and writers with teen girls. At a recent star-studded event, a few prominent actors brought some of the teens’ stories to life. KPCC’s arts education reporter Carla Javier takes us there.
